Good to know

BMI is a population-level screening tool, not a diagnosis. It uses only height and weight, so it cannot distinguish muscle from fat — athletes are routinely classified as overweight, and it reads differently across ethnic groups and ages. It is genuinely poor for children, pregnant people and the very elderly. Treat an unusual result as a reason to talk to a doctor, not as a conclusion.

If you want a second number that captures something BMI misses, measure your waist. Waist circumference tracks abdominal fat, which is the part most strongly linked to health risk, and it takes thirty seconds with a tape measure. Together the two numbers say considerably more than either alone — and a trend over months tells you far more than any single reading on any given morning.

What is a healthy BMI?

The WHO ranges are: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30 or above obese. These are population averages, not individual targets.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Often not. Muscle is denser than fat, so a muscular person can register as overweight while carrying very little body fat. BMI cannot tell the difference.

Does BMI work for children?

Not with these categories. Children are assessed against age- and sex-specific percentile charts instead, which a paediatrician can interpret.

Does this work offline?

Mostly, yes! The site uses a Service Worker to cache core files. Once you've visited, most tools work without an internet connection. Some tools that load external libraries (like PDF.js) need internet on first use, but are cached after that.

What are the file size limits?

Images: up to 50 MB each. PDFs: up to 200 MB each. These limits exist because processing happens in your browser's memory. Very large files may be slow on older devices.

Can I add this to my phone's home screen?

Yes! On Android Chrome, tap the menu (three dots) and select "Add to Home Screen." On iOS Safari, tap the share button and choose "Add to Home Screen." The site will work like a native app.
