About Redact PDF

Black out names, account numbers, addresses and anything else you would rather not hand over, then download a copy with those details genuinely gone. Most of the time you need this because something has to be shared — a bank statement as proof of address, a payslip for a rental application, a medical letter for an insurer — and the document carries far more than the one fact the other side actually needs. Drag a box across anything sensitive, or type a name and let the tool mark every occurrence across every page. The file never leaves your browser, which matters rather a lot when the file is a bank statement.

Good to know

This is real redaction, not a black rectangle laid over live text. Plenty of tools — and the annotation feature in most PDF readers — simply draw a filled shape on top, leaving the original words sitting in the file underneath, where a select-all, a copy-paste or a command-line text extractor pulls them straight back out. Newspapers and law firms have leaked names exactly this way. Here, every page is re-rendered to an image with the boxes burned into the pixels, and the PDF is rebuilt from those images, so the hidden text no longer exists in the document at all. The trade-off is honest: the redacted PDF has no selectable text and is larger than the original. For a document you are about to send to a stranger, that is the right way round.

Draw your boxes a little larger than the text itself — descenders, accents and the tails of letters sit outside where you think the line ends, and a sliver of a visible character can be enough to guess a name. Use the text search for things that recur on every page, such as your surname or an account number, then page through and confirm each one, since the search finds only text the PDF actually stores and positions substrings approximately in proportional fonts. Scanned documents contain no text layer at all, so nothing will be found and you should draw boxes by hand. Before sending the finished file, open it, press Ctrl+A and copy — if nothing selectable comes out, the redaction did its job.

Private by design

Redact PDF runs entirely inside your browser. There is no upload step and no server to send anything to — the file you choose is read by the page, processed on your own device and handed straight back to you. That means no queue, no file size quota beyond your own machine, and nothing of yours sitting in someone else's storage afterwards. It is free, has no watermark, needs no account, and keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can the blacked-out text be recovered?

No. The pages are flattened to images with the boxes painted into the pixels, and the PDF is rebuilt from those, so the original text is not in the file at all. This is the difference between redacting and merely covering — a black annotation drawn in a PDF reader leaves the words underneath, fully copyable.

Is my document uploaded anywhere?

No. It is opened, edited and saved entirely inside your browser tab. Nothing is transmitted to any server, which is the point when the document is a bank statement or a medical letter.

Why is the redacted file bigger, and why can't I select its text?

Because destroying the hidden text means replacing each page with an image of itself. That removes the text layer along with everything you redacted. If you need the output smaller, run it through the PDF compressor afterwards.

Does the text search catch everything?

It catches text the PDF stores as text, on every page. It cannot find anything in a scanned image, and in proportional fonts the box it places around a substring is approximate. Always page through and check before downloading.

Can I redact a scanned PDF?

Yes, by dragging boxes by hand. The text search will find nothing because a scan is just a picture, but the redaction itself works identically.

Mostly, yes! The site uses a Service Worker to cache core files. Once you've visited, most tools work without an internet connection. Some tools that load external libraries (like PDF.js) need internet on first use, but are cached after that.

What are the file size limits?

Images: up to 50 MB each. PDFs: up to 200 MB each. These limits exist because processing happens in your browser's memory. Very large files may be slow on older devices.
